Agriculture

This forms the backbone of the economy in the Langeberg Region.
The Langeberg region is predominantly a wine, brandy , fruit , vegetables and olive producing area. The region also features more than 50 boutique cellars ,Privately owned and co-operative cellars that produce award –winning wines of various cultivars.
Wine is by far the biggest export earner in the region. The region is also well known as the "Dried Fruit Pantry" of South Africa , exporting quality dried fruit and nuts across the globe.
Furthermore , the Langeberg climate makes the region attractive for the planting of olive orchards and this is expanding every year. Along with this there is a strong agri- processing industry. Agriculture is the second largest sector for employment in the region.

This is the biggest sector in the region and currently employs the majority of the workforce .This is also the sector with the best growth potential in the region.

Finance and Business Services

This is one of the fastest growing sectors in the region. This includes real estate, insurance and business services.

Wholesale and Retail

This sector has experienced a 6,7 % year on year growth rate in the last ten years and with the establishment of new Retail Malls in the area, all the Nationals are now represented here. This sector also benefits from the tourism industry and activities such as the Wacky Wine and Wine on the River.

Tourism

This one of our key focus areas and with the regions natural beauty,
wide range of attractions and wonderful climate is has become a very popular destination for tourists.
Marketing is continuously improving and the benefits are showing in the increasing number of visitors to the region. The R62 tourism route, the longest wine route in the world also forms part of the Langeberg Region.
The most popular attractions for tourists are , visiting wine farms, festivals, boat cruises, tractor trips, golfing ,hiking , bird watching ,mountain biking , river rafting , rock and mountain climbing.

Building and Construction

The Building and Construction sector experienced the highest GDPR growth of all sectors with 9,7 % year on year over the last ten years. This shows a steady recovery after a very difficult few years . This is an indication of the growth of the region and that investors see the potential of the region.
This recovery makes it viable to invest in SMME Development to supply skilled and semi- skilled labor to the market.
The Skills on demand from the various sectors has therefore create an opportunity for LIFE to do a Skills Audit in the Region and to establish a Data Base for all unemployed people in the Region. This will enable Life to provide an essential service to all new investors as well as existing businesses in the Region.

SMME  Development

This recovery makes it viable to invest in SMME Development to supply    skilled and semi- skilled labor to the market.
The LED Department of the Langeberg Municipality has done a great job in developing the SMME sector and their successes cover:

  5. 16 Cooperatives
